One of the important ecosystem services provided by seagrass meadows is an ability to capture carbon and store it within their sediments. This is sometimes called ‘blue carbon’.

Healthy, undisturbed seagrass meadows around the UK coast are as effective at absorbing and storing carbon as our woodlands, so protecting and restoring these meadows can help us in the fight against climate change.

On World Ocean Day 2021 and in the run up to the G7 summit in Cornwall, ReMEDIES and Project Seagrass, with additional support from other organisations, released ‘Marine Meadows of Cornwall’. This short, powerful documentary explores seagrass and the urgent need to protect and restore it.
